ESPN's latest viewership data makes the Pat McAfee situation even more interesting.
The Pat McAfee Show averaged 520,000 viewers in Q1 2026, its best quarter ever, with record monthly averages in January, February and March, according to ESPN. Year-over-year gains of 16%, 28% and 25% respectively put the show among the strongest performers in the network's entire studio lineup, part of a broader 14% gain across ESPN's daily studio programming in Q1.
That context matters. As State of Streaming noted earlier this week, Netflix is the frontrunner for McAfee's next deal, with Ari Emanuel now involved in positioning what comes after his current ESPN contract expires in 2028. Emanuel, TKO's executive chairman and the architect of Netflix's WWE deal, has signaled McAfee's next contract will be structured as a broader platform partnership rather than a standard talent agreement.
For ESPN, the data is a double-edged sword. The numbers validate the $85 million investment. They also quantify exactly what the network stands to lose. McAfee's show outpaced First Take, NFL Live and every other daily program except late-night SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt during the quarter.
As Jean Carucci, principal owner of Carucci Consultants, noted of McAfee's trajectory, "He identified a specific audience who were passionate about their teams and leagues and created an IP that tapped into that passion. He had a vision and he stuck to it and the end result is an alternative broadcast that is great for fans and advertisers."
That organic audience engine is precisely what makes his next deal feel less like a rights negotiation and more like a platform acquisition. Netflix is likely drawing its own conclusions.
