Peacock is shaking up its NBA broadcasts with a new “On the Bench” format that embeds commentators directly with teams during games. The high-risk experiment aims to give viewers unprecedented access, but it's already raising questions about just how close is too close.
Boots on the hardwood: The format, debuting October 27, will see play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle work from a traditional table while commentators Austin Rivers and Robbie Hummel operate from their respective team benches. The role extends beyond the game itself, requiring the commentators to join team shootarounds and pregame meetings to gather insights.
A familiar playbook: NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood promised to “respect the sanctity” of team information, but getting the league’s buy-in required some convincing. The network’s top brass personally briefed team owners and coaches on the plan, according to the Sports Business Journal. The concept builds on NBC's previous success with its "Inside the Glass" analyst for NHL coverage, a move that was eventually copied across the sport.
A chorus of concern: The plan has drawn skepticism, with ESPN analyst Richard Jefferson warning on his podcast that players won’t want a broadcaster in their personal space. The logistics also present a clear challenge to building broadcast chemistry, bringing back memories of TNT’s short-lived “Players Only” experiment.
NBC is betting that deeper access will create a must-see product, but the line between groundbreaking insight and awkward intrusion is thin. The move is part of NBC's broader strategy to make Peacock a go-to destination for live sports, with the company also reportedly locking up MLB's Sunday morning package to bolster its lineup.
