Paramount’s bet on fewer originals pays off, ‘Yellowjackets’ sets streaming records

Paramount Global’s high-stakes gamble on integrating Showtime and prioritizing fewer, marquee originals appears to be paying dividends, with its hit series Yellowjackets delivering crucial validation for the strategy. The survival thriller’s Season 3 finale secured a record 3 million global, cross-platform viewers in its first seven days of availability, according to data released by the company.

Record performance: The finale viewership marks a significant 19% increase compared to the Season 2 finale audience from May 2023. Growth was even more pronounced on streaming platforms alone, where the Season 3 closer surged 54% over its predecessor, making it the most-streamed episode in the series’ history, Paramount reported.

Strategic validation: These numbers lend strong support to the company’s strategic direction. “Yellowjackets is a fiercely original, genre-bending phenomenon,” said Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, in a widely circulated statement. “Season three drove record numbers and was key to maintaining Paramount+’s ranking as a top three SVOD for original series minutes, proving the power of our differentiated strategy with fewer, bigger, breakthrough series.”

Season-long strength: The finale capped off what Paramount touted as the show’s most-watched season overall to date, with total viewership edging up 3% compared to Season 2 across all episodes measured over seven days, according to Deadline. The series now ranks as the second most-streamed global Showtime original ever, trailing only Dexter: Original Sin.

Platform context: It’s worth noting, as highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter, that Season 3 marked the first time Yellowjackets aired fully within the integrated Paramount+ With Showtime environment, which launched in 2024 after Season 2 had concluded on Showtime’s previous standalone platform. While this complicates direct comparisons slightly, the reported growth figures solidify the show’s status as a key asset driving engagement for the combined service.
