Editor's Note

FouAnalytics is a syndicated column by Dr. Augustine Fou—one of the leading independent voices in ad fraud detection and digital marketing measurement—applying methodological rigor to the programmatic advertising supply chain. This piece demystifies website bot traffic, explaining how to separate harmless search crawlers and direct hits from genuine ad fraud that wastes campaign budgets.

A client asked about bot traffic on the brand website. They were concerned about the amount of red in their FouAnalytics chart below.

A quick glance at the FouAnalytics dashboard showed that about 6% of the traffic had a UTM_SOURCE, which tells you it came from a paid campaign, and 77% of that came from Google. While this advertiser could press down the red a bit more on the Google campaigns, the vast majority of the red (bots) hit the pages directly and did not come from clicking on an ad. That means the bots were not wasting their ad budgets. While these bots are a nuisance, they are not ad fraud, just bots hitting a public webpage, accessible to anyone on the internet.

I also see some sites that look like the following. Note the large amount of yellow (search crawlers) from January through April.

If we isolate the yellow from January, we can see the following in the supporting detailed data. Almost 65% came from Google data centers, and the IP addresses are highly repeated. These corroborate they are bots.

And the user agents say they are Googlebot/2.1. These bots did not click on ads; they just hit the page directly, so there is no action needed—i.e., no bad sites and apps to add to block list—hence the title of the article "When to NOT Care About Bot Traffic" on your site.

Why Subscribe

Because not every bot on your website is stealing your ad budget—and knowing the difference saves you from chasing phantom fraud. Every week, FouAnalytics uses forensic campaign data to separate real programmatic ad waste from harmless web crawler traffic, giving media buyers and budget owners the independent clarity needed to make smarter marketing decisions.
