Editor's Note

FouAnalytics is a syndicated column by Dr. Augustine Fou—one of the leading independent voices in ad fraud detection and digital marketing measurement—applying methodological rigor to the programmatic advertising supply chain. In this column, Dr. Fou examines systemic misalignments across the digital ad ecosystem, from Google's updated impression billing standards to agency holding company rebate structures, outlining how advertisers can protect their media investments through independent measurement and binding MSA terms.

You can't/shouldn't trust Google.

Earlier this year, I wrote Hold Google Accountable with FouAnalytics. Why? Because Google told you to your face that they will bill you for unrendered impressions — "Beginning on February 17, 2027, we will move to the Begin-to-Render methodology. This means an impression will only be counted once the ad has successfully loaded and has STARTED to render on the user’s device" (not FINISHED rendering, which is when a user can see the ad). Note that previously Google billed you for ads that were invoked (defined as 'the creative download to start'), not even downloaded into the device to begin to render.

You can't/shouldn't trust WPP (or other holdcos)

Last week, I wrote Why FouAnalytics released public MSA boilerplate language for advertisers. Why? Because Sony corroborated the whistleblower's allegations that WPP had a global scheme to give kickbacks to themselves, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. WPP is not the only holdco doing this. And those lawsuits don't include adtech vendors and DSP platforms giving kickbacks to agency holdcos. And they don't include malpractices like the holdcos keeping unspent media dollars at the end of the year by falsifying the CPM to make it look like it was all spent. I am sure you all have war stories of your own about illegal, immoral, or "gray area" practices by agency holdcos over the last two decades. So I won't belabor this point.

The MSA boilerplate, linked here https://api.fouanalytics.com/api/redirect-10063a1630g66hccibl67.html is meant for advertisers to adopt and adapt for their own purposes. The key point is that advertisers can use FouAnalytics as the standard of measurement and the standard of billing and payment. That means, if the platform (e.g., The Trade Desk) reports 1 billion impressions purchased, but FouAnalytics only measured 900 million, you only pay for the 900 million. You don't pay for what could not be measured at all, or measured completely. And there's impression-level data and evidence through FouAnalytics.

You can't/shouldn't trust legacy verification

I have written for 15 years (with data and evidence) that you can't trust legacy verification vendors, because their detection has been broken for a decade (failing to detect even bots that declared themselves to be bots, and others have also documented this) and the remaining two vendors were acquired by private equity and it's going to get worse, if worse is even possible. Note the search volume for IAS (red line below) dropped off after they were acquired last year, and the same is happening to DV (blue line in Google Trends). And I can confirm advertisers and agencies are already shifting their verification budgets to FouAnalytics; that is only going to accelerate.

Why Subscribe

Because platforms bill you for ads that never fully render, agency holding companies face scrutiny over non-transparent kickbacks, and legacy verification tools let self-declared bots slip right past them. Every week, FouAnalytics uses forensic campaign data to expose the hidden take rates, measurement loopholes, and supply-chain waste draining your marketing budget.
