Amazon is launching Prime Vision, an alternate broadcast feed for its UEFA Champions League matches that uses AI to overlay the live game with augmented reality graphics and advanced statistics. The new viewing experience will debut on September 16th for customers in the UK, Germany, and Italy.
Stats on demand: The feature brings pro-level analytics directly to the fan broadcast, moving beyond a simple score bug. Viewers can see a "Tactical Map" of all 22 player positions, a "Momentum" bar that predicts the likelihood of a goal in the next 10 seconds, and advanced metrics like expected goals (xG) and player speed, all enabled by augmented reality graphics.
The NFL playbook: The move expands on a system Amazon first developed for its NFL Thursday Night Football coverage, signaling a broader strategy to enhance live sports with a tech-forward approach. "The goal is to experiment and test an all-new broadcast whilst preserving the main broadcast experience,” said Alex Green, Prime Video Sport’s Managing Director.
TBy treating its sports broadcasts like a tech product—complete with optional features and data-rich interfaces—Amazon is betting that a more interactive, video game-like experience can become a key differentiator in the crowded streaming wars.
The wider view: The move is part of Amazon's larger push into global sports, which also includes a major deal to stream live NBA games starting this fall. Beyond live games, the company is also building a library of original sports documentaries and testing different business models, such as offering some French football matches on a pay-per-view basis.
