Netflix’s Live Podcast Play Kicks Off with Bill Simmons

Netflix is launching a live, weekly video version of The Bill Simmons Podcast starting January 11, a move to bring popular Spotify podcasts to the streamer and challenge YouTube. The show will air Sundays at 11:30 PM ET, timed to follow the NFL’s primetime playoff game.

  • The YouTube gambit: The Simmons series is the first to launch from a wider Netflix-Spotify partnership that will bring over a dozen Ringer podcasts exclusively to the streaming service. The deal is aimed squarely at YouTube's video podcasting dominance, with Netflix reportedly planning to build a slate of 50 to 75 shows. The strategy requires partners to pull their full video episodes from the Google-owned platform, trading massive reach for a premium, subscription-only audience.

  • The fine print: Following the live broadcast, video-on-demand versions of the show will be available on Netflix and Spotify. The audio-only version will remain available on all other podcast platforms, ensuring the core audio product remains widely accessible while the video becomes a Netflix exclusive. Ahead of the debut, Simmons announced he is reviving his popular mailbag segment as an "extra gimmick" for the new format.

The move into live talk continues Netflix's evolution beyond movies and TV, adding a cost-effective way to drive engagement to its growing lineup of live sports and games. Netflix's ambitions extend far beyond podcasts, as the company recently refinanced a massive loan for a potential bid on Warner Bros. Discovery assets. Meanwhile, an analysis of the streamer's initial podcast slate reveals a notable omission of comedy shows, one of the medium's most popular genres.
