NEW RESEARCH: Streamer of the Month — How Apple TV and Ecosystem Takeovers Dominated

GET THE REPORT: Streamer of the Month: September 2026

As the media and entertainment industry shifts its focus toward profitability, measuring the exact value of digital storefront real estate has never been more critical. Connected TV (CTV) platforms dictate what audiences watch. As we explored in our analysis of who truly owns the home screen and YouTube's path to dominance, controlling the default gateway is now the most valuable leverage in media. But tracking who is actually winning that promotional real estate requires moving past vanity metrics.

The latest "Streamer of the Month" report from Looper Insights analyzes the top 13 CTV devices in the U.S. during September 2026 to reveal who is commanding the digital shelf.

The Framework: Understanding $MPV

Looper Insights tracks every digital asset across major CTV devices worldwide—the interface you see the moment you turn on a smart TV, Roku, or Fire TV stick, before you've opened any app. To answer what a spot on that home screen is actually worth, they built a metric called Dollar Media Placement Value, or $MPV.

$MPV translates on-screen visibility into an estimated monetary value by factoring in three things: placement prominence (weighted share of voice), audience reach (device base and impressions), and industry-standard CPM benchmarks.

It is not a measure of how many people watched a show, and it is not ad revenue that was actually sold or booked. It is a standardized valuation of a content's promotional exposure. Think of it like pricing a digital billboard—based on how many eyeballs pass it and where it sits, regardless of who actually looks up.

Here is a breakdown of September's top performers based on that framework, and the strategic shifts driving the CTV landscape.

Free TV Commands the Highest Valuations

When looking at the top 10 apps by overall placement value, the dominance of Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) is undeniable.

While a premium SVOD titan like Prime Video took the number two spot with $182.6 million in $MPV, it was sandwiched by two free platforms: The Roku Channel claimed the absolute top spot industry-wide with a staggering $208.9 million, and Tubi followed closely in third with $175.5 million.

Why it matters: The top of the digital food chain is no longer exclusively reserved for paid subscriptions. The Roku Channel and Tubi out-promoted massive legacy apps like Disney+ ($119.3M) and HBO Max ($80.5M). This confirms that FAST platforms are operating with premium budgets and securing the most valuable real estate on the television operating system to drive ad-supported viewership.

Apple TV’s "Quality Over Quantity" Playbook

While FAST platforms won on sheer app-level volume, Apple TV dominated the individual title rankings.

Powered by a potent mix of live sports and flagship hits—a deliberate strategy we recently highlighted in our look at why Apple TV is the last streaming holdout against the unscripted wave—Apple TV snagged three of the top ten promoted titles for the month: Formula 1 (taking the #1 overall spot at $7.3M), Ted Lasso (#4), and Major League Soccer (#7). Combined, this power trio banked over $18 million in $MPV.

Notably, Apple TV is also becoming highly aggressive outside its own walled garden. To promote the new comedy series Brothers (starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson), Apple crafted a premiere campaign that deliberately pushed past its own ecosystem, planting the show directly on competitor home screens across Fire TV and Google TV.

As we explored in Reading the Tea Leaves: Apple, Interface, and Peacock, this kind of aggressive cross-platform UI maneuvering shows exactly how fluid the battle lines for audience acquisition have become.

Why it matters: Apple is proving that a targeted, quality-over-quantity playbook pays off. By anchoring its service with high-retention live sports and spending heavily to promote premium, star-driven IP on rival hardware, Apple TV is justifying its recent U.S. subscription rate hike (from $12.99 to $14.99 per month).

The Art of the Ecosystem Takeover

When major franchises launch, streamers are no longer settling for a single carousel placement. September saw multiple platforms orchestrate full-blown ecosystem takeovers to ensure their flagship hits were unavoidable.

  • Paramount+ Runs the Turf: For the second season of MobLand, Paramount+ seized key territory across every major CTV battleground—including Fire TV, Roku, LG, Vizio, and Samsung TV. The platform repeated this saturation strategy for the 29th season of South Park, completely taking over interfaces to prove the legacy animated comedy still commands the living room.

  • Prime Video's Spinoff Strategy: Prime Video deployed the Reacher spinoff, Neagley, with tactical precision, flexing its own native Fire TV hardware ecosystem while simultaneously annexing major CTV territory across Samsung TVs.

  • The Blockbuster Showdown: The month closed with a cinematic battleground, as Coyote vs. Acme, The End of Oak Street, and Supergirl fought for home screen supremacy, locking down top-tier grids across Google TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV.

Why it matters: Breaking into the top 10 most-promoted titles is nearly impossible without a multi-platform saturation strategy. If a streamer wants a new release to make an instant splash against established giants, they must buy or negotiate premium takeovers across multiple OEM interfaces simultaneously.

Things To Do About This Now

1. Benchmark Your FAST Strategy If you are treating FAST as a secondary distribution tier, you are falling behind. With The Roku Channel and Tubi leading the entire industry in placement value, advertisers and content distributors must prioritize FAST platforms as primary, premium digital storefronts.

2. Buy Past Your Own Ecosystem Apple TV’s strategy with Brothers proves that walled gardens are a limitation, not a feature. To maximize viewer attention, media buyers must actively secure premium placements on competitor hardware and rival operating systems.

3. Prepare for Bundle Consolidation As streaming fees outpace inflation, platforms are leaning into consolidated packages to retain budget-conscious consumers. Amazon's new $29.99 monthly bundle (packaging AMC+, BritBox, MGM+, PBS Masterpiece, and Starz at a 39% discount) signals that simplified content discovery and aggregated billing will dictate the next phase of subscriber retention
