Paramount has won the majority of UEFA Champions League media rights in the U.K. and Germany starting in 2027, a major streaming play as reported by BBC Sport that displaces incumbent broadcaster TNT Sports. The move is a key part of Paramount's global strategy to use premium live sports to drive subscriptions for its Paramount+ streaming service.
Paying to play: The deal was part of a landmark $11.5 billion auction for rights across Europe's top five markets, with the final tally representing a more than 20% increase in value from the previous cycle. BBC Sport reported Paramount's bid was "well in excess" of the nearly £1 billion deal currently in place with TNT Sports.
A new subscription required: The decision boots TNT Sports from top-tier European football for the first time in over a decade, with The Athletic reporting the incumbent "was blown away by Paramount’s financial firepower." For fans, this further fragments the viewing experience, as Amazon's Prime Video renewed its own deal to lock in the rights for one top-pick weekly match.
Adding insult to injury: The aggressive bid comes amid swirling rumors that Paramount is preparing another offer to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of the very TNT Sports it just outmaneuvered.
By securing a crown jewel of European sports, Paramount has not only bolstered its streaming service but also dealt a strategic blow to a potential acquisition target, fundamentally altering the sports media landscape.
Paramount's move is part of a broader trend, with other streamers like Netflix and Apple TV also snapping up global soccer rights. Meanwhile, some rivals are taking a different approach, as ESPN embraces distributing its content on third-party platforms to fight fragmentation. The Champions League deal isn't Paramount's only recent sports play in the U.K., as its Channel 5 also secured rights to live NFL games.
