Harmonic is rolling out a central management system designed to unify streaming workflows, giving video operators a single control panel to manage operations split between private data centers and the public cloud. The platform helps operators cut costs and more efficiently handle peak demand for major events like live sports.
Best of both worlds: The move helps streaming providers capitalize on the scalability of the cloud without racking up huge costs. According to Harmonic's vice president of video customer solutions, Eric Gallier, the goal is to let operators "easily control streaming services no matter where they are located — whether on-premises, in the cloud or across both," lowering the total cost of ownership.
A built-in safety net: The system automates the grunt work, using rule-based triggers like content popularity to shift video assets between cheaper cloud storage and faster on-premises servers. The platform also uses the cloud to backstop the on-site infrastructure, providing a safety net in case of failure.
Riding the wave: The launch comes as Harmonic enjoys renewed momentum after a tough year. The company has seen its stock jump over 11% in the last month, a surge fueled by recent partnership deals and a strong showing from its broadband division. The company will be demonstrating the technology at the IBC2025 trade show in Amsterdam this week.
By focusing on simplifying complex backend operations, Harmonic is cementing its role as a key software and services provider for the modern media industry, proving that managing streaming's intricate infrastructure doesn't have to be a cost-prohibitive headache.
Harmonic's technology is also being tapped to power next-generation broadband, with regional operator Midco using the company's platform for a major fiber network upgrade in the U.S. Midwest. Globally, its software is enabling new revenue streams for broadcasters, as seen with OSN in the Middle East launching targeted advertising for the first time. Meanwhile, in Japan, established media giants like SKY Perfect JSAT are working with Harmonic to modernize their traditional broadcast workflows.
