Illegal Streaming's 'False Economy' Hits Users With Thousands in Fraud

By SOS. News Desk | Nov 13, 2025

A new study from BeStreamWise reveals that the "free" content on pirate streaming services is a costly mistake, with UK users losing over $2,000 on average to fraud—an amount that dwarfs their estimated savings.

  • A bad bargain: The financial hit is widespread, with a survey of over 2,000 UK consumers finding nearly 40% of users have lost money to fraud in the last year. The average loss of over $2,000—more than half the UK's average monthly salary—starkly contrasts with the estimated monthly savings. For more than one in ten victims, the losses topped $9,500.

  • The criminal playbook: Cybersecurity experts warn these platforms are a Trojan horse for your bank account, designed to steal financial data. "The moment you plug in a modified device to your TV, or download an illegal streaming app... you’ve done all the hard work for them,” said ethical hacker Rob Shapland. The report found nearly two-thirds of users also had their devices hit with malware or malicious pop-ups.

Police are treating the issue as a gateway to serious fraud that also diverts funds from the entertainment industries. In response to the findings, BeStreamWise is launching new consumer campaigns to highlight the real financial and security risks of piracy.
