Amazon’s hit comedy Jury Duty is returning for a second season on March 20, trading its courtroom premise for a corporate retreat at a family-owned hot sauce company, as reported by Variety. The new installment, titled Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, will once again center on an unsuspecting individual who believes the elaborate, staged event is real.
A spicy setup: The target this time is Anthony, a newly-hired temp who thinks he’s attending a real company event. In reality, the entire retreat is a fabrication, and all of his colleagues are secretly actors. The narrative reportedly hinges on a "David vs. Goliath" power struggle for the company’s future, as the founder’s retirement sparks a battle for the soul of the hot sauce empire.
From Freevee to the big leagues: The show's move to the main Prime Video platform follows its debut on the now-shuttered Freevee service. The original creative team is back at the helm, but James Marsden—who played a caricature of himself in the first season—will only serve as an executive producer and is not part of the new cast.
The challenge for Company Retreat will be to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle charm of the original while proving the format can succeed beyond the novel courtroom setting. Amazon is betting that the workplace satire angle will give the series a fresh, relatable appeal.
The show's producers went to great lengths to maintain the integrity of the premise, with reports revealing the second season was filmed in secret long before its announcement. Meanwhile, the creative team intentionally set the new theme around a small business to explore new dynamics outside of the legal world.
