Roku is converting its famous purple cityscape screensaver into an interactive stage called "Live from Roku City," a move to create a new destination for original content. The new experience launches with a virtual performance from pop star Demi Lovato.
Knock on the purple door: The virtual stage, accessible to over 90 million households, is entered through an interactive building in the skyline. Inside, Lovato performs her new single, “Here All Night,” and a cover of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
More than a concert: The activation is more than a simple video embed; Roku also built a showroom with behind-the-scenes content and an album pre-save option. The move to build a destination out of its UI follows the introduction of ads to the screensaver in 2023, signaling a deeper push into interactive content.
The official take: Roku Media President Charlie Collier called the initiative "TV's biggest stage," while Lovato framed the performance as a reflection of her new album's "electric energy."
By turning a passive UI element into programmable digital real estate, Roku is creating a powerful new vehicle for original content and advertising that it controls from the moment a user turns on their TV. But not everyone was impressed with the execution, with one critic describing the performance as Lovato being "trapped on a roof." Meanwhile, the company is making other moves, including requiring two-week notifications for streaming price hikes and launching its first native smart projector.
