Spincast Patents a Future for TV Shopping That Ditches the QR Code

By SOS. News Desk | Feb 22, 2026

Spincast has secured a U.S. patent for an AI-powered system that enables in-video purchasing directly on a TV, aiming to replace the clunky QR code with a frictionless, remote-based solution. The technology is designed to make any on-screen moment a point of sale without disrupting the viewing experience.

  • Solving the second screen problem: The patent targets what has long been the Achilles' heel of shoppable content: the jarring context switch that forces viewers to pick up a phone. Data from internal research shows viewers are far more likely to complete a purchase with their remote, making the elimination of this friction point a key battleground for engagement.

  • A game-changer for content: Spincast's solution was also built to be friendly to content owners by keeping studio anti-piracy measures intact. Founder and CEO Daniel H. Thompson told tvTech the tech is a "game-changer" that can "re-monetize past product placement deals found in evergreen content," opening up new revenue from existing media libraries.

The move positions Spincast against industry giants like Amazon and Roku, whose own forays into on-screen commerce still largely depend on the QR code. The bet is that whoever finally cracks seamless, remote-based purchasing will have the decisive edge in the fight for on-screen commerce.
