Breaking Bad' Creator Vince Gilligan Renews Sony Deal, Highlighting Scarcity of Indie Studios

By SOS. News Desk | Sep 25, 2025

Vince Gilligan, the creator of the "Breaking Bad" universe, is sticking with Sony Pictures Television, renewing his exclusive overall deal for another four years. The agreement ensures the highly-sought-after showrunner and his High Bridge production banner will remain at his studio home of more than two decades.

  • Hollywood's last indie: In a statement, Gilligan called Sony "excellent partners" and added a pointed critique of the industry. "I’m proud (and a little sad) to be working for Hollywood’s last independent studio," he said. "I think our industry would benefit from more of them."
  • Saving the world from happiness: Gilligan's next project is "Pluribus," a Sony-produced series for Apple TV+ that already has a two-season order. The show's official logline describes it as a "genre-bending original in which the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness," starring "Better Call Saul" alumna Rhea Seehorn. Apple will drop the first two episodes on November 7, with the rest rolling out weekly.
  • Locking down a legend: The deal signals Sony's commitment to retaining A-list creative talent in a fiercely competitive market. For Gilligan, it provides a stable and supportive home base as he launches his first major post-Saul project.

The renewal puts a spotlight back on Gilligan's acclaimed work, including the curious case of "Better Call Saul," which garnered 53 Emmy nominations without a single win. Gilligan's "last independent studio" comment also highlights Sony's unique role as a key content arms dealer to a wide array of third-party streaming services.
